Why We Help

Since Hawbush opened its gates to visitors we have been delighted to see an increase of site users all of whom submit positive feedback for the facilities that we offer and impact we make to the individuals or groups concerned. Some of our current visitors include;

Hawbush Primary School.

We run an After School Gardening club for small groups of year 5 children. Children and their parents voice their keen interest in the gardening club, and the enjoyment it brings.

We are currently working with Hawbush School to arrange a program for individuals who find it difficult to complete a full timetable in main stream school

Pens Meadow Special School.

Pens Meadow is a school that delivers additional and specialist education to young adults who have learning difficulties

Youth Offenders.

A small group of Young Offenders visit the site most weekends. They not only attend to allotments, but also provide valuable support for the general maintenance of the site. The majority of young people reported how much they enjoyed their time on the site, finding the environment was helpful with stress and their feelings of aggression. One young man, has now joined us as a volunteer following the end of his reparation program.

The Youth Offenders are also now working on a Bee Project which we hope will bring a successful bee conservation area to the site.

Connect Project:

The Connect Project delivers a program of mental health support, and Hawbush Gardens offers the perfect venue. It is widely recognised that working outdoors can improve mental health. The group have two allotments at the Gardens which offers an opportunity to work in tranquil surroundings, and provide a time of relaxation and social connectivity

Black Country Foodbank.

We have at least one allotment at any time that is dedicated to the growing of fresh fruit and vegetables for the local food bank. In recent years we have been able to provide 60Kg potatoes, 48kg tomatoes, 10kg apples and other seasonal vegetables to both food banks and local residents

Dudley Social Services.

We often play a role in local Family Support Work including children protection and child in need cases. Visits to the gardens can help to improve relationships and bring a time of quiet to those that may need it.

Integrated Plus Project.

We also receive NHS referrals for social prescription benefits via gardening. Outdoor activity is recognised as an ideal way to combat a range of mental health and physical ailments.

Adult Learning.

We have hosted a number of different Adult Learning classes at Hawbush which, alongside investment in the community development and training of the Hawbush area, will help to improve residents with advancing their skills and employment prospects.

Safe Families for children (Dudley).

Some of the Hawbush Community Gardens Trustees are also registered as approved volunteers

Workshop 24.

This is a local social art project that have organised workshops on site, including the popular Brierley Bells and Curiosity Club

Little Acorns Nursery

Visits to the site for the younger members of our community where they can see and learn about nature, the environment and their surroundings
